My wife is weak from over two decades of cancer and its treatment. So how do you protect yourself when you look vulnerable? She asked me, “What do I do if I am attacked?”
My wife is usually bright eyed, but she was weak when there was a local class on self defense for women. She signed up anyway. She made up for her limitations with attitude: she was going to participate fully. She warned the instructors NOT to treat her any differently because she wanted to learn.
At the end of the course, there was a physical test to employ the technques they had learned. The local sheriff dressed up with protective gear. He is the one in red gear in the image. Each student also had gear and took turns resisting his feigned attack. They had to resist the attack and do what was required to stop the alleged assailant. It took everything out of her, but she did the test so well they had to step in and stop her. She was too busy earnestly repeating the same defense technniques she had learned. Even the instructor was impressed.
Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, do you resist the enemy of your souls that way? Unbelievers, do you know you even have an enemy interested in keeping you beat down and spiritually dead? These are serious questions that are addressed in Ephesians 6:10-18 as well as other Scriptures. The blows of the enemy a more subtle and even more serious than a purely physical attack. Fighting words or phrases like standfast, resist, be strong, stand firm, defense, sword, arrows, and armor are used in this portion of the Bible.
God is faithful in circumstances to give us instruction and circumstances just like a self defense class, so we are prepared for the inevitable attacks that come. So the next time you feel like being a wimp and giving in to temptation or not reisting the enemy of your souls, give it a second thought. Fight. Fight God’s way. It will require something of you, but you will be better for it, and may be able to help others as well.
Start by grabbing a Bible and reading Ephesians 6:10-18.
Enjoyed this topic very much. Excellent reminder that we are in a spiritual battle against the powers of darkness. We must go out each day fully dressed in the armor of God, so that we might resist evil and stand firm in our Faith. (Eph 6:10-20)
