Pet Parable

It is not uncommon to learn things from animals. Even God uses his own created creatures as lessons (like the latter chapters of Job) or even to speak (like the donkey that speaks to the wayward prophet in Numbers 22). They still teach things if one has a mind to “listen.”

So here we are traveling down the road a few years ago. Neither animal wants to be on floor or in the back seat. They have to be nestled on Linda’s legs and able to see her and me. That is “drawing close” in dog terms.

An essential element for the life of believers is learning to draw close to God. It is stated in James 4:8 and Hebrews 10:22. But the act of drawing close is also demonstrated in so many scenes, where sinners, saints, the sick, kings, and common people do the same thing. On the other hand, the hard heart resists God–never to come close and does not want to. The proud and seemingly self-sufficient stand back and aloof. The humble come close.

It is clear from God’s point of view: drawing close is a natural yet spiritual thing to do for those who want to know him. Will you draw near? Will you seek to be as close as you can–like these little animals want to be close to their masters? You can.

  1. Very true! This is where we get our strength to keep going despite all the hardship and trials in life. It is in drawing close to him that we develop a more intimate relationship to Him as our Father and friend! Thanks Sir Roland and Ma’am Linda. Praying for you!
