It was not many decades ago when we received our first images of earth that showed a blue sphere suspended over nothing. Indeed, the hand of God to create the earth and heavens out of nothing is simply stated in Genesis, but Job 26:7 lends a little emphasis by saying, “He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing.” While we are beginning to understand some of the complexities of the solar system, God’s special place of habitat for mankind is radically unique. The blue gem we see in “hung” in space remains and will always remain entirely unique. It was created to be inhabited by man, who was specifically created in God’s image. This purposeful context is a far cry from the random undirected evolutionary process that supposedly resulted in what we see and is taught as fact. It is not. It is simply a world view that excludes God and demands (because it must) that everything we see self-generated.
A sense of that suspension of earth can be seen when the moon is observed. Even on a cloudy night, the near-full or full moon looks dramatically “suspended.” On a recent night I sketched that very scene, which is hard to replicate because the moon’s brightness piercing the clouds is hard to get right. In more general terms, the verse in the sketch is certainly true: when we consider the heavens, which are the work of his fingers, how is it that he is mindful of us? That is when those images of earth are helpful. Even on the night I did the sketch, how can the earth be forgotten? The temperatues were mild; the clouds show the moisture so essential to life, and I am able to gaze at the heavens and the moon from a safe vantage point. It was a good night to give thanks.
