Job 9:8-10 clearly declare the creative hand of God with regard to particular objects in the heavens and make reference to the ‘chambers’ (King James Version) or ‘constellations’ (New International Version) of the south. So the patterns of significant stars in the southern celestial sphere are noteworthy to God. They speak of his wonder and power. When coupled with creation scriptures (like Genesis) they shout of God’s definite, exact, and precise arrangement of the night skies. So when I have opportunity to observe in this area of the sky, I remember what these scriptures say. With this introduction, let me introduce two observing sketches of two objects but then comment on them with another scripture that might be surprising.
The first object is called Centaurus A. It is a most unusual galaxy from our vantage point. I made the sketch in a notebook (black pencil on white paper) but inverted the image and observing sheet that you see below.
During the same series observing sessions in Mississippi I also observed and sketched a second object that is a little further north, but still considered the southern skies. It is in the constellation Hydra, which is very long from east to west and comprises mostly dim stars to the eyes compared to most constellations. The galaxy is beautiful to observe.
So what does this have to do with Thomas, who is known as the “doubting Tomas”, who had trouble believing that Jesus was risen from the dead until he could touch Jesus for himself? The account is found in John 20:24-29. It is recorded for us and shows and excellent example of our doubting nature–refusing to believe when God has made something clear.
But remember: this same God created the heavens as they are, and makes reference to the constellations of the south. Their construction and placement is His doing. Do you believe it? Thomas had trouble believing that Christ, the Author of the heavens, was risen. Consider God’s patience to have this conversation with Thomas–inviting him to touch His side that had been pierced.
The Creator and the Saviour of our souls, if we choose the believe, is the same Person. The Maker of lovely M83 and Centaurus A has made Himself plain. It is we who must choose to believe.
