Distractions and addictions to media abound in our culture. It is possible to be immersed to the point that real questions about purpose and direction are buried. However, sooner or later, but usually at a young age, people begin to look around at life, earth, water, and sky to ask the universal question, “How Can This Be?”
I remember that period. No book, instructor, eastern religion, or friends had an answer. I took philosophy, religion, and science classes. There was no answer given except that it had to come about by itself. I looked around again. “Nope,” I said, “that cannot be either.” There is simply too much complexity in any part of life I observed for that answer to make sense. Something had to be behind it. Of course, I already knew what history recorded. Humans were a mess and not improving. That did not make sense either. How can all this be?
The lack of answers drove me to the answer. God was real, but I did not know Him. That didn’t help my inner lack of peace. I tried a few things. Nothing worked.
Then someone introduced me to Jesus Christ, and the Bible came alive in my hands. Since then, I have seen it happen repeatedly with others. Surely it is true that without Him nothing makes sense. With Him, however, I see differently.
But those distractions can be overwhelming. Something happened to a psalmist many centuries ago. He was noted in the Bible to be after God’s own heart. He had discovered the reality of the things he saw. It moved him so much that he purposefully put away distractions. This is how he said it in the first part of Psalm 101 verse 3: “I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless.” There were plenty of distractions around him as well, even without the media barrage that is prevalent today, but he discovered the steadfast love and justice that is in God.
There is that place in a relationship with Him where one can say that nothing else compares.
