The constellation Orion begins to rise at my latitude late every year. By early in a new year, it is in the south, as the image shows. Changes in the heavens are like a clock as one goes through any given year. The periodicity of the heavens that we can observe was set up by the Creator. It means that most of the created heavens cycle past my backyard sky view in the course of 12 months. Any given night, on the other hand, shows the same clock on a daily basis as the world turns beneath the heavens at fifteen degrees per hour. That is why I see Orion begin to rise in the East after sunset in December, and I wake before dawn to see Orion setting in the West. By March I can watch Orion setting in the early evening in the West. The obvious display of His power, imagination, and creativity is displayed as the heavens cycle through our calendar. Whether it be the heavens or any other part of creation, Romans 1:20 says that no one has an excuse to ignore the magnificence of what He made. God’s signature is on every part, whether it be on the earth or in the sky.

A 2010 Quick Sketch of Orion.
One might say, “God cannot do this. And, it certainly was not done in part of a day!”
Oh?
He held the sun in place for a day (Joshua 10). He calmed a raging Galilean Sea in an instant (Matthew 4:35). He raised Lazarus after being dead several days (John 11). He made the complete information system (DNA and RNA) in the first human being in part of the 6th day of creation, formed the woman shortly after, and both had complete language and communication capability the same day (Genesis 1 and 2). The earth is entirely unique, as intended to be inhabited (Isaiah 45:18). A list of demonstrated capability by our Creator would require a complete reading of the Bible and thousands of instances that are recorded where God acts. And, He Himself was raised from the dead.
How big is your God? The God of the Bible is rather powerful (deliberate understatement). Psalm 19 gives you the verses for the reason of the display of the heavens — it shows some of God’s attributes. Scope after scope (on earth or in space) looks for the edge of the Universe. It cannot be detected. Life is sought elsewhere. It cannot be found.
It seems He is very powerful. Perhaps what He says is true.
Note: The image below shows the beautiful Orion Nebula, which I sketched in the past using some astro-video equipment that permits me to see some of its color and structure.
If anyone wants to learn to observe the heavens from a biblical view, there is a 10-lesson course (free, PDF format) for anyone to use that is downloadable from this site. Look under <downloadable courses> and find AOBV (Astronomical Observing from a Biblical View).
