Connecting the Dots on Fossils

They clustered around the table to look at an array of marine and plant fossils during the break. We were well into the biblical creation seminar in the Philippines and had laid the groundwork from the Bible on the worldwide Genesis Flood.  For many audiences in the Philippines, the content is often unknown and wider in scope than they have heard. During the breaktime, a small set of fossils gives them an introduction to the nature of fossils and how the rapid chemical process freezes the objects in time. All of that is interesting to them, and we provide magnifying glasses and blow-up images so they see the fine detail in leaves, fish, and clam fossils.

By the end of the discussion on the Flood, we have connected the dots as we speak of the vast array of fossils coupled with locations where they are found. It gives a glimpse of the magnitude of the event. This serves to highlight the Biblical information about what led to the Flood and why it was significant.

So, I want the reader to connect the dots by doing the same thing I tell the audiences. Go to a good search engine and ask for fossil images in any country, or sea, or continent. Then ask for fossils in terms of geography: mountains, deep sea, rivers, plains, etc. After ignoring the sales information (someone always wants to sell something), look at sites where experts or specialists in any number of fields record their findings. This could include oil industries, mineral industries, coal industries, universities, geographers, and many others. If I have a laptop, I do it in front of an audience. The evidence is astounding in terms of different types of fossils in different locations. Then, I ask the audience to stand back and think of a world map and see the obvious: something very big happened all at once.

There is only one event in history that can produce the evidence — the Genesis Flood — just as the Bible tells us. Then the reasons begin to sink in. The horrific event occurred by command and was stopped by command.  Extensive evidence is worldwide. Only those living things on the Ark survived. I make them walk out the dimensions for the Ark when there is time. Then we review the population today, which makes sense given the bottleneck in the population at the time of the Flood.

By the end of the seminar, the false notion is broken that man is somehow fundamentally good and improving, which comes from evolution. Then the reality of the biblical history, which points to man’s need for a Savior, begins to make real sense. Indeed, Christ is our only hope. The big Bible picture begins to take shape: creation, fall of man, the Flood, the history of Israel, the Messianic prophecies, the Messiah (birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ), who made a way for our sins to be forgiven.

It also is part of our presentations to show a key truth: God is watching as He brings us closer to the final chapters of earth’s history. Indeed, we are born and live at various times and places for one reason: to choose whether to have a relationship with Him or not. For those who call out to him and find him, as Paul says in Acts 17, they can enter into a relationship that is ever so important.

As we close the seminars, they look again at the fossils, and I encourage them to consider the exercise where we connected the dots. God is after something, telling us something, and wanting us to remember why it all happened, where it leads, and how we fit in.

Want to know more? Get the app for Android or Apple phones. Type “creation study helps” in the search window and look for the white hand emblem with a blue circle background. The app is by RJ Beard Publishing. It’s free to download. This site has the links for the app also.

If you want the printed copy of the 2nd or 3rd edition (and its ‘Addendums’ companion that we use in training in some of our seminars for pastors and church leaders), they can be ordered from Amazon or other retailers at a low cost. rjbearedpublishing.com has the links.

In the US where we live, wonderful books are available from places such as creation.com, answersingenesis.org, and icr.org. There are others, too. Where we typically go and share, however, those resources are usually not available or affordable.  That is what drove us to the free app and the low-cost printed second and third editions.
