Vanishing Act

Things that are fleeting and quick often either get attention from the observant person or escape notice for the unobservant. Many circumstances teach us that circumstances can be unique, happen fast, and may not happen again. Life is that way, too. When the time to act comes, the time of decision can vanish quickly.

20151207-venus-moon-cometHeavenly conjunctions teach the same lesson. The dawn of December 7, 2015 was an example. The comet Catalina could only been seen briefly. Then it was lost in the light of morning. It’s meeting with the moon and Venus marked its location. Comets are short-lived by themselves and this transient view of Catalina accented the point. So it is with mortal life, which the verse on the observing sheet shows. God knows we and everything we have is very transient, so it is a better choice to make right choices while He gives us the chance.

A meeting like this is called an “occultation.” The drawing shows three glimpses from 12:19 pm to 12:38 pm. The psalmist expresses a parallel point in spiritual terms that can be applied too lives. We, too, are transient.

So are you right with God or even know Him? I recommend finding the answer if you don’t know it. Do you know God but the days pass with little affect of His voice or presence? You might want seize the moment to get your bearings, because we often let life drift away. Decisions in this life set the stage for what is to come. Are you making them right? Like a vapor, the opportunities vanish quickly. Need help on the matter? Let me know if you have no one to help.

  1. Have only been able to observe comet Catalina only 2 time due too many overcast nights here. But God controls all nature.

    • We have also had very few nights to catch the comet, so it was a blessing that we did that particular night. It is always a pleasure to catch one when we can. And, of course, it is always a good night to give thanks…clouds or not.
