The Posture of a Disciple

As said in the Scripture and we have said here, God teaches us many ways but they include lessons from what we see around us. Parables from creation abound. Here is one:

In my walk this morning I encountered a dogwood tree in full Autumn color that is typical for October. However, it is not just the color that stands out to me. Nestled in the auburn leaves are the signs of the the tree’s work from the last few weeks: the preparation for the early spring flowers. The buds of future dogwood blooms are mostly prepared and waiting. They will weather the winter months of harsh weather but will be unbothered by cold storms, low temperatures, and frozen precipitation. They have to be formed a season ahead of their future purpose: to produce a bloom and the “fruit” of the tree. The winter is not just harsh circumstances, it is a time of posturing for the tree. Things are being stored and prepared for spring, when the buds quickly unfold and blossom.

So it is with spiritual preparation in the heart of a disciple. It does little good in the Christian life to ignore preparation for future use in the Master’s hand. The preparation for tasks ahead must be done ahead of time. The Word must be built in the heart. Prayer for the concerns of others must be ongoing and active. The character traits of humility and steadfastness must be continued in present circumstances, because they will affect how people and situations ahead must be properly handled. And all these are especially effectively accomplished in harsh weather, winter-type circumstances, because they prepare the heart and prepare the path ahead. When the Spirit begins to blow in the path ahead, the preparation pays off. There is no short cut. This discipline process a season ahead of time is required.

So, posture yourself. Do the things God has ordained for the day. But remember that some of what happens today is also preparation for future work. If current circumstances seem a bit tough, remember they play into the Master’s loving hand. He wants us prepared for what is to come. Learn from the dogwood in autumn. The same theme is often addressed in the Bible. Here is one example in Hebrews 12:10-11:

Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

If you are a not a believer, then the interaction with God I speak of will be foreign. However, I can assure you, being a Christian means this interaction is very real, just as His love is very real. The message of the Gospel is very good news for those who call on Him. If you have questions, ask a believer, or ask us through the contact page. I would be glad to talk with you.      Roland
